Homeless man arrested, charged in NN home invasion

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested one man in connection with a home invasion that happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 24 along Richland Drive.

31-year-old Christopher Ricardo Vargas was arrested and charged after officers went to the house.

Vargas, who police say is homeless, reportedly assaulted a 53-year-old Newport News woman at gunpoint during the home invasion.

Officers on the scene talked to a 20-year-old victim who said that two men armed with guns broke into the home and were still there at the time. Upon entering the home, officers saw that the suspects had left through a bedroom window.

Police were then able to pursue and catch Vargas close to the house. He now faces eight total charges:

  • Aggravated assault and battery
  • Robbery
  • Burglary
  • Use of a firearm in commission of a felony
  • Use of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.

Officers also recovered a shotgun and ammunition from the scene.

Police also say that the second suspect, 26-years-old Jonathan Michael Sojka, is currently wanted on charges of robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and burglary.
