Soccer community mourns sudden death of teenager

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Joyful, fearless, a force to be reckoned with on the soccer field, is how loved ones describe a 15-year-old Granby High School student who died last week.

Kyle Huggins’ friends tell WAVY.com the soccer player died of a possible undetected heart condition. He was not playing soccer when he died. But, the sport was a big part of his life.

Huggins’ family and friends gathered for a vigil for him Friday night at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach.

“He was just kind to everybody,” said his coach Barb Mytch. “He accepted everybody.”

Huggins played on the U-17 Christ the King advanced soccer team with Beach FC Soccer Club. His loved ones tell WAVY.com he was a freshman at Granby High School in Norfolk with hopes of getting into the Governor’s School for the Arts.

Huggins’ family showed up to Friday night’s vigil and were moved to tears by all the teenager’s friends had to say about him.

“I’m sure he’s here,” said Huggins’ mother, Shanna Crockett Ferebee. “He loves this.”

One Christ The King teammate said, “Kyle never gave up. And that’s the lesson I still remember from Kyle. Win or lose, he never gave up. And I’m always going to keep that close to me.”

Friends have started a fundraising page to help Huggins’ family with the funeral costs. Click here for more information.
