NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Norfolk Police Department just completed a successful year of its partnership with Nextdoor, the free and private social network for neighborhoods.
Over the past year, adoption of Nextdoor across Norfolk has risen dramatically. There has been a 353 percent increase in membership on Nextdoor. There are now 100 Norfolk neighborhoods, a 144 percent increase over the past year, that rely on Nextdoor to connect with each other and our department.
“We are very excited about the impact our partnership with Nextdoor has made on our efforts to improve communication and safety for all of our communities,” said Chief Michael Goldsmith. “Nextdoor has been a convenient and efficient way for us to ensure residents feel safe and heard within their own communities and by the police department. We are excited to announce the progress we have made and encourage more residents to join the conversation.”
The Norfolk Police Department and Norfolk residents have worked together on Nextdoor to significantly increase communication and engagement. The partnership has actively generated and shared nearly 80 informative posts and updates with members either on a city-wide level or neighborhood level.
“The Norfolk Police Department’s successful integration and effective use of Nextdoor over the past year should be commended and celebrated,” said Joseph Porcelli, Senior City Strategist at Nextdoor. “Many residents and neighborhoods feel a stronger connection to each other and the Norfolk Police Department, and we are honored that Nextdoor has played a role in that.”
Nextdoor is free for residents. Each Norfolk neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website and the City cannot access residents’ websites, contact information or content. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines.
The Norfolk Police Department partnered with Nextdoor in November 2014 to provide another citywide and neighbor-to-neighbor communications channel.
