Tree falls on power lines in Newport News, causes outage

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A power outage reported in Newport News left more than 1,000 residents without power Tuesday afternoon, according to Dominion Virginia Power’s website.

The outage was reported in the Cliveden neighborhood of Newport News at around 1 p.m. and affected 1,054 customers.

Newport News Fire Department tweeted at 2:20 p.m. that crews were on the scene of downed power lines in the 200 block of Richneck Road.

A hazmat team along with crews from Dominion Virginia Power responded to the scene due to a transformer that was reportedly leaking oil. Two power poles were also broken.

Firefighters also say that a person was removed from a car that was trapped by the tree, but that no one was injured.

According to Dominion’s website, power was restored Tuesday night.
