NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Arleigh Burke-class, guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74) returned to Naval Station Norfolk after spending eight months at sea.

“I thought this was going to be our first Christmas without her,” said Yolanda McClendon whose daughter deployed. “We’ve always had Christmas with her. When she said Dec. 14 we got in the car and we rolled out.”

“I’m excited,” said ET2 Nicholas Woodard. “I have some catching up to do with these two so I’ve missed a lot and I know it.”

The destroyer was deployed in April, and its independent deployment spanned the U.S. 4th, 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation. The USS McFaul arrived at Naval Station Norfolk Monday morning.

“We did it,” said Commander Mike Gunther. “Great crew. They’re unbelievable. A motivation in training and staying upbeat and taking care of each other like a family on board.”
