Good Samaritan helps elderly woman after brutal attack in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — An 86-year-old woman was beaten, badly cut and left for dead. That is until a good Samaritan came along to save her. The victim is now out of the hospital and resting comfortably at home.

The attack took place around 7 a.m. Saturday at the Cool Wave Car Wash. A cab driver vacuuming his car saw the victim leaning against a wall behind some bushes.

Al Sinawi was shocked and raced to help her. “She was covered with blood. It was awful. How can people do this to each other?” said Sinawi.

Sinawi drives for the Orange Cab Company, and another cab driver took a picture showing emergency responders providing medical treatment. Sinawi had called 911 after finding her in the bushes. “I noticed something moving behind those bushes. I found her and you could see traces of blood against the wall.”

Sinawi couldn’t believe what he saw. She was disfigured from the attack, and it was bloody and so sad. “She was bleeding everywhere,” Sinawi told WAVY.

Sinawi brought her back to his cab, “The lady was barely breathing, so she was like this [leaning on the cab] and she was barley breathing she said please call my daughter. I didn’t call her but called 911,” he said.

Police took the victim to the hospital. Newport News police are looking at surveillance video from two cameras.

The victim is not homeless, but she collect cans daily at the Village Square Shopping Center. A family member tells 10 On Your Side she donates the money she earns to charity. “She comes through the shopping center and picks up cans from the trash cans, and that is something she does everyday,” says Edward Lacourse who works at KSL Beauty Supplies. They are the ones who handed over the video that will hopefully help police.
