VIRGINIA BEACH ( WAVY) – Aaron McFarland scored 15 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 1:59 left in the game, and Christopher Newport University kept its unbeaten record in tact with a 64-61 win at Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday.
The Captains (7-0), ranked no. 12 in the nation, are enjoying their best start since the 2000-2001 season.
Meanwhile, the Marlins (5-3) got a game-high 18 points from Tim Jones and 14 points a piece from Khory Moore and Nick Doyle. Moore had a look at a game-tying three pointer in the final seconds, but his attempt rimmed out to give the Captains the final margin.
CNU will play at Pittsburgh- Greensburg on Wednesday, while Wesleyan heads to Mary Washington.
