HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police have made an arrest in a 1981 homicide cold case.

Authorities arrested 65-year-old Ruben Edward Moore and charged him in the death of Olivia Christian.

Police said 32-year-old Christian was found dead inside her home in the 200 block of Ivy Home Road on September 4,1981. The Daily Press reports that police had said someone had beaten and strangled Christian. After her death, the case went cold. Since then, an obituary shows Christian’s mother, father, and brother passed away.

Moore has been charged with homicide and remains behind bars.

The Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry shows Moore had a prior conviction in Hampton for rape in November 1982. No one answered the door at his last known address. Neighbors said they were surprised by the accusation and that they had not had any problems with him.

Police said the indictment was based on evidence from the Attorney General’s office, which will prosecute the case along with the Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney. The case remains under investigation.

WAVY News has left messages attempting to locate friends or relatives of Olivia Christian.
