Gracielle Devikia Donise Garnett, 33, was arrested on Dec. 8 and charged with one count of homicide.

Police said Garnett was caring for Kyrie Devon Crooms last month at a home on Winchester Drive when he stopped responding. Fire and rescue crews took him to the hospital and nearly a week later, the baby died. Police said Garnett assaulted the baby.

Garnett’s mother, Tami Garnett, told WAVY.com her daughter was babysitting the little boy, called his mother and 911, and performed CPR when something went wrong.

“She is the sweetest, most giving, most caring person that anyone on this earth would want to know. She has two children of her own that have never been harmed…I believe that when the smoke clears and the dust settles, and all the truth is brought to the light, my daughter will be acquitted of all these charges,” she said.

Another juvenile was in the home at the time. Child Protective Services was called and the children living at that residence are being cared for by a relative.

Garnett is in police custody at the Hampton City Jail.
