VDOT to hold open house meetings on third crossing study

PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) — If you hate being stuck in traffic here’s one chance to be heard. VDOT will hold open house meetings Wednesday and Thursday to present four options, or they say if you have a better one, they’d love to hear it.

Here are their options:

A) A new tube at the HRBT in the existing right of way and the widening of I-64 to six lanes.

B) A new tube, in addition to road improvements to I-564 and I-64, as well as a new tunnel across the Elizabeth River and a new four lane highway to just east of Craney Island, tying into Route 164 which would also be widened to six lanes.

C) A bridge-tunnel crossing with a Craney Island connector, widening I-664 from Hampton to I-264 in Chesapeake and an additional crossing parallel to the Monitor Merrimac-Memorial Bridge-Tunnel and between I-664 and I-564, to the north of Craney Island.

D) This is a hybrid which combines all of the improvements in B and C.

You’ll find more information and maps of the proposed plans on the Hampton Roads Study website.

The meetings will take place: Wednesday from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Ocean View Elementary School in Norfolk and Thursday from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Captain John Smith Elementary school in Hampton.
