VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police in Virginia Beach arrested and charged a teenage boy with felonious assault after they say he attacked a woman at the Lake Lawson-Lake Smith Natural Area Sunday morning.
The Natural Area is a recreation space with a playground, walking trails, and fishing docks.
WAVY.com spoke to the 26-year-old victim Tuesday. She said she was simply out for a walk after getting brunch with a friend near the park. She chose Lake Lawson-Lake Smith because it had five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.com.
She said she noticed the boy as she was on the last leg of her walk, heading toward the parking lot and thought he appeared out-of-place. She described him as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants, standing still on the path, with a dog on a leash. As she walked by, she said the teenage boy and dog began to follow her. She said she heard them get closer, then the dog walked out in front of her, so she stopped. That’s when she recalled, “he whacked me on the back of my head.”
The woman says the blow was painful and pushed her forward. She put her hands on her knees to brace herself, then reached one hand up to her head to feel for any injuries. That’s when she says the boy hit her again, this time, striking her hand.
She says she then turned around and the boy had the “evilist look” in his eyes. She said she noticed a “huge 8-inch kitchen knife like the kind used to cut potatoes” in his hand.
She told WAVY.com she began running as fast as she could toward the recreation area, screaming. She says the boy chased her at first, slowly, but then turned around and began walking toward the parking lot. She said several people rushed to her when they heard her screaming, describing several good Samaritans as “more than helpful.”
The victim needed two staples to her head and eight stitches on her hand.
Virginia Beach Police said at least one witness in addition to the victim were able to give police a detailed description of the suspect. As a result, police were able to locate the suspect a short time later.
The victim told WAVY.com that according to detectives, the victim was found at his home, and police recovered the knife. She should make a full recovery.
The juvenile was taken to the Virginia Beach Juvenile Detention Center, and has been charged with one count of felonious assault.
The woman says the teen didn’t take anything from her, and she cannot understand why someone would just attack her. Police have made no comment on a possible motive.
