COMO, N.C. (WAVY) — A Chowan University student was killed in a weekend shooting incident at the Shandy Shores Lakeside Lounge, the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred at the lounge around 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

There was a party at the lounge with as many as 400 people in attendance, consisting of some university students and locals.

Sheriff Juan Vaughn says that several fights started inside the lounge, with one disturbance making it outside. A young man then pulled out a gun and started firing.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old DeMarco Trevon Duncan, of Temple Hills, Maryland, was shot once in the back while attempting to run from the scene.

His friends then attempted to take him to the hospital in pick-up truck, and were pulled over by deputies who had a description of the vehicle — so that rescue crews could give the victim first-aid.

Duncan was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Vaughn says they have not identified any suspects, but that they have a few leads in the case.
