HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton firefighters say there were no working smoke alarms in an apartment building when a fire started Monday morning.

Crews were called to the apartment building in the 100 block of Sewell Avenue in Hampton around 11 a.m., after one of the residents reported smelling smoke.

The fire was contained and extinguished, but five adults and one child were displaced. A dog was also found dead after the fire.

According to firefighters, the fire occurred in a three-story house that had been converted into apartments.

Firefighters say the fire is not suspicious, but the cause remains under investigation.
