(WAVY) — Frank Beamer will coach his final regular season game for Virginia Tech this Saturday when the Hokies travel to Charlottesville to take on Virginia.
It will likely be the final game for Cavaliers coach Mike London. In six seasons, London has had one winning season, and with a salary north of $3 million annually, the writing appears to be on the wall. While London has underachieved on the field, he’s still popular in the locker room.
“We love coach London, we are all here because of coach London,” quarterback Matt Johns said. “This university and coach London are the two main reasons we are all here. We are love playing for him and we love that guy to death.”
The last time Tech lost to Virginia was in 2003, back when Matt Schaub was the quarterback. The Hokies need to keep the streak against the Cavaliers alive in order to qualify for a bowl game. The Hokies have been to a bowl every year since 1993, and Beamer knows the stakes are high Saturday.
“It means a lot,” Beamer said. “The bowl game streak, there’s a lot riding on it, there’s no question about that.”
