ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — A fatal two-vehicle accident on Route 17 near Muddy Cove Circle in Isle of Wight County stopped traffic in both north and southbound directions for several hours.

State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya confirms troopers responded to a call around 11:27 a.m. Wednesday of an accident involving a dump truck and a sedan.

According to investigators, a 2015 Buick Verano was heading northbound on Route 17 when the driver veered into the southbound lanes of Route 17 and crashed head-on into a 2007 Mack Dump Truck.

The driver of the Buick, 80-year-old Stanley Morrison of Portsmouth, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the dump truck, Wallace Nichols, of Suffolk, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Morrison was wearing his seat belt and alcohol was not a factor.

The area around the Isle of Wight County side of the Sidney B. Hazelwood Sr. Bridge — also known as the Crittenden Bridge or the Chuckatuck Creek Bridge — on US Route 17 was closed for several hours. The road reopened shortly after 5 p.m.
