NORFOLK (WAVY) – Contrary to the standard “one game at a time” coach’s talk, Bobby Wilder is putting the pressure on his Old Dominion football team. “We’re in elimination mode right now,” said Wilder at his weekly press conference.
The Monarchs (4-5, 2-3 Conference USA) are coming off a come-from-behind 36-31 win at Texas- San Antonio, and are two wins away from qualifying for the program’s first ever bowl bid. Wilder made no bones about how big Saturday’s win was, and how big his team’s upcoming game against Texas- El Paso is.
“It’s the most important game since our playoff games in 2012,” he said. “When we met last week, we talked about being at 3-5, and we need to have a sense of urgency. We have to win three of the last four to get bowl-eligible. Well, we go the first one Saturday and now we’ve got to win two of three and our players really feel that sense of urgency right now.”
ODU’s home kickoff against UTEP is scheduled for noon.
