New court date set for Norfolk officer charged with voluntary manslaughter

Michael Edington (Norfolk Police Department).

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk police officer charged with voluntary manslaughter will be back in court next month.

Michael Edington Jr. is charged in the death of David Latham. Police were called to Latham’s house on West 30th Street in Park Place in the summer of 2014. His family says he suffered from mental illness. Officers say when they arrived to help, Latham threatened them with a knife.

Court documents show Edington opened fire, shooting Latham several times before he died. A special grand jury indicted Edington a year after the shooting.

Defense attorneys have requested the court’s permission to return to the scene. That will be decided during the next court appearance scheduled for December 15.
