VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It has been 10 months in the making but finally Virginia Beach Police rolled out special vehicles Friday.
The department’s marine, air, and mobile command vehicles were named after officers who died in the line of duty.
When a vehicle is retired its replacement will adopt the name of the fallen officer. Police say memorials like this are important to remind the public of the sacrifice public protectors make everyday, but also a reminder to officers that what they do really does matter.
Sgt. Brian Ricardo said, “Every officer is important. Present day officers and fallen officers. We will never forget by having a name on the side of a truck, boat, or helicopter.”
Names were carefully chosen for each vehicle. For example, two helicopters are named after two pilots who died in a helicopter crash and two boats are named after two divers that were killed during a police training accident.
