Police believe shooting victim could be robbery suspect in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a shooting that could be in connection with a robbery attempt Sunday evening.

Officers were on a routine patrol in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue, when they were flagged down by a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The 23-year-old was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. A gun was then discovered in the possession of the victim.

Shortly afterwards, a call of a robbery attempt came to dispatch by the clerk of the Quick Save Mart, also located in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue.

According to police the two reports suggest that this was a robbery attempt thwarted by the clerk of the business. Detectives and officers are conducting their investigation to confirm this report.

The victim is in serious condition. No one is in custody at this time as the investigation continues.
