VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A former mail carrier convicted of stealing mail will spend one day in jail.

Raynard Heckstall was sentenced Friday and will also be on probation for three years.

Prosecutors say Heckstall stole gift cards, greeting cards, and cash from people on his route in Virginia Beach between 2014 and 2015.

According to court documents, video surveillance set up by the Postal Service showed Heckstall going through and opening mail in his postal vehicle while on his route.

Surveillance video from a local department store also showed Heckstall and a friend redeeming gift cards he had stolen.

Heckstall worked as a carrier assistant at the Princess Anne U.S. Postal Station in Virginia Beach from April 2014 – April 2015.
