HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton fire crews responded to Syms Middle School after a report of a natural gas leak Thursday morning.
Fire investigators tell WAVY.com, around 10 a.m., construction crews had partially severed a four-inch feeder line to Syms Middle School, located at 170 Fox Hill Road.
Officials decided the school would not have to be evacuated. The students were sheltered in place and air monitoring equipment was brought into the school.
However, nearby Foxcroft Apartments had a limited evacuation for a short period.
Fox Hill Road was shut down in both directions until Virginia Natural Gas secured the leak.
Construction crews will remain on scene for several hours to repair the pipeline and roadway.
