Alleged DUI driver crashes into police vehicle responding to separate DUI incident

22-year-old Kayla Sierra Dean

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Beach police say a woman allegedly driving under the influence crashed into a Virginia Beach police vehicle while officers stopped another woman accused of DUI.

Investigators say an officer pulled over 51-year-old Robin Schmalbach on I-264 W at First Colonial Road, Friday just before midnight. Schmalbach was charged with DUI.

About 26 minutes after Schmalbach was stopped, a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Kayla Sierra Dean struck the Virginia Beach Police car which was on-scene assisting the officer that stopped Schmalbach.

Police say there were only minor injuries reported in the accident.

Dean was charged with DUI and failure to yield right-of-way when approaching stationary emergency vehicle.

Editor’s note: A prior version of this story stated Schmalbach was the driver that crashed into the police vehicle. Virginia Beach Police later released a correction stating there was a mistake on their end.
