2 critically hurt in Elizabeth City head-on crash

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – A head-on crash Sunday evening triggered a second crash and sent three people to the hospital.

Investigators determined the driver of a Honda Civic crossed the center line on US 17 at Anderson Street just after 7 p.m. and struck a Ford Crown Victoria approaching in the opposite direction.

Then, a Dodge truck crashed into those vehicles. The truck had minimal damage, but the other vehicles were totaled, according to the Elizabeth City Police Department.

The driver of the Crown Victoria, Randy Jones, was treated at Albemarle Hospital and released. Both occupants of the Honda Civic were critically injured in the crash. They are being treated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Police have not identified the driver, but said his passenger is Miguel Lainez.

Alcohol is considered a factor in this crash, police said. Charges are pending.
