NNPD: Officer shot pit bull in self-defense

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a dog shot by an officer Sunday afternoon was euthanized due to the extent of the animal’s injuries.

Police tell WAVY.com the officer shot the pit bull in the 700 block of 31st Street in self-defense.

The Newport News Police Department says a 9-1-1 call was received at 12:41 p.m. in reference to an argument between two women at a home on 31st Street. The two women were inside the residence fighting when officers arrived and a third woman was outside.

Police say the front door of the home was opened once police arrived on scene, although it’s unclear whether an adult or child inside the home let the dog out.

The pit bull was shot as it lunged toward the officer, according to police department spokeswoman Holly McPherson.

McPherson says the incident is still under investigation.
