One killed in vehicle crash, fire in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A person died when their vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire early Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson with the Chesapeake Police Department.

First responders rushed to the scene near Benefit and Taft roads at 1:10 a.m., and found the vehicle on fire with the driver dead inside.

The driver appears to have been speeding, according to police.

Because of the fire, investigators say they will have to perform DNA tests to determine the driver’s identity, which make take several days.
