PAINTER, Va. (WAVY) — Investigators arrested a man accused of killing a teenager during an argument inside a home on Keller Pond Road.
Deputies responded to the victim’s home after receiving a report about a person shot around 10:45 a.m., according to the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office.
Breonya Collins, 13, was found with a gunshot wound when deputies arrived. Collins died at the hospital.
Friends say the teenager was a 7th grade student at Nandua Middle School in Olney, Va. Grief counselors were on hand at the school Monday.
“At first I heard it in school, and I didn’t want to believe it,” said close friend and neighbor Grequan Reid. “We have always been friends. We did everything together, always.”
Investigators say a verbal argument between the teenager and Nicholas Martinez White, 23, ended in gunfire. Deputies say White fired a fatal round at Collins.
The victim and suspect were family friends, according to Lieutenant Gerald Goga, a spokesperson for the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office.
“I looked at him like a brother,” said Quasiyah Reid. “It’s just hurtful. He didn’t deserve what he got. We just want to remember him for who he was.”
Lt. Goga would not say if anyone else was at home during the argument or shooting.
White, who lives in Onancock, remains in the Accomack County Jail without bond for second-degree murder and a weapons charge, according to investigators.
