ODU rallies past Charlotte 37-34 behind Washington’s 4 TD’s

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Zach Pascal had an 11-yard touchdown reception with 2:18 remaining to help Old Dominion beat Charlotte 37-34 on Saturday.

Jonathan Duhart converted the ensuing 2-point conversion to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Charlotte turned over on downs at the Old Dominion 44 with 21 seconds left.

David Washington was 25 of 43 passing for 365 yards and four touchdowns for Old Dominion (3-3, 1-1 Conference USA). Pascal caught 11 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns – all career highs – including a 53-yarder in the first quarter.

Redshirt freshman Shuler Bentley started the game for ODU, but was pulled after the Monarchs opening series.

Now, Washington is firmly entrenched as ODU’s new starting quarterback.

“David’s the starter now, he’s earned that,” said Wilder.

Washington, a redshirt junior, was originally Taylor Heinicke’s backup and played limited time at quarterback. Last season  Bobby Wilder moved Washington to wide receiver.

“We were going to play Shuler a series and then David the second and go from there and just see who we felt better about,” Wilder said. “We wanted David to play some quarterback early in the year to take some pressure off Shuler but he badly sprained his ankle in the first game of the year at Eastern Michigan and that affected him in games against Norfolk State and North Carolina State.”

Washington wasn’t even sure he would stay in the game after he threw a 53-yard touchdown to Pascal.

“I thought I was going to go in for one series and then it was going to be back to Shuler,” Washington said. “But they just kept calling my name.”

Pascal, who tied ODU’s school record with 3 touchdowns, says Washington is a dynamic player.

“He’s probably one of the best athletes on our team,” Pascal said. “With the ball in his hand it’s a lot that can happen, and as you saw here today, a lot can happen.”

ODU plays at Florida International next week.
