Coast Guard helicopter rescues sailor near Ocracoke Inlet

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WAVY) — A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a man stranded in a grounded sailboat near Ocracoke Inlet Friday evening.

Watchstanders received an alert about a 30-foot sailboat aground and taking on water near the inlet just before 7:30 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the Coast Guard’s 5th District Public Affairs office.

Because a 47-foot lifeboat launched from Station Hatteras Inlet could not reach the boat because of shallow water, a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter flew from Air Station Elizabeth City to rescue the man.

Its crew hoisted the man into the helicopter just after 9 p.m., and transferred him to Red Cross personnel waiting at the Elizabeth City boat ramp, according to a news release.
