NORFOLK (WAVY) — The Old Dominion Monarchs (2-3) are 8.5 point favorites in Saturday’s Homecoming game against Charlotte.
Both teams come in with 2-3 records, and both teams are coming off of a bye week
“We’ve played three really good teams in a row,” said Charlotte coach Brad Lambert. “ODU is another one on defense that’s very active and athletic so it will be tough again this week”
Last week, the Monarchs went all in with a 11-on-11 scrimmages, Charlotte did the same thing, and Wilder says its important for his squad to play situational football.
“The scrimmages were outstanding,” Wilder said. “We just need to play more football right now with the youth on this team.”
With the offense stuck in neutral during ODU’s three-game losing streak, Wilder said the passing game was one of the focuses of the bye week.
“The number one area we worked on was pass our pass game,” Wilder said.
Redshirt quarterback Shuler Bentley has struggled the last three games, and he hopes for a quick start against Charlotte.
“Some early success would be nice,” Bentley said. “Hopefully get the ball first, go down the field and score just to get confidence going, that we can do this, everyone can take a breath we can do this, we can play with these guys, we can move the chains.”
At 2-3 with seven games to play, Bentley says the teams goals are still attainable.
“The goal we can control is going to a bowl game we have full grasp on that goal,” Bentley said. “Our goal is still there to go a bowl game, go somewhere warm for Christmas and we will need this game to help propel us to 6 wins.”
Kickoff is set for 3:00 at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
