Portsmouth approves hire of new city attorney

Solomon Ashby

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth has a new city attorney after the previous person in that post was fired earlier this year.

City council unanimously approved the hire of Solomon Ashby at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Ashby is coming to Portsmouth after serving as the assistant city attorney in Suffolk since 2011.

Back in April, former Portsmouth City Attorney George Wilson was fired by the council and deputy city attorney Cheran Cordell has served as interim city attorney since.

Ashby will earn a $150,000 salary. His first day on the job is Nov. 1.
