HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton fire crews were called to battle an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon.

Dispatchers received the first call at 12:46 p.m. for firefighters to respond to the 100 block of Friendly Drive.

Video from a WAVY viewer shows heavy smoke coming from the complex.

The fire damaged three apartments and extended to the attic. Fire crews got it under control in about an hour.

Investigators say no one was home when the fire broke out. Maintenance workers notified the fire department. Several animals were rescued, but a pet cat died in the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting five displaced residents.

A firefighter went to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, but is going to be ok.

The investigation into what caused the fire continues.
