Teen shot, robbed in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a teen walked into a Newport News barbershop asking for help after he was shot and robbed Thursday afternoon.

Investigators tell WAVY.com two 17-year-old males were outside the Illest Cutz Barber Shop, located in the 1900 block of 25th Street, when they were approached by an armed man. Police say the man robbed both teens and shot one in the leg before fleeing.

WAVY.com spoke to several people in the area who heard one single gunshot and then saw people running.

No one inside Illest Cutz was willing to talk with WAVY.com. However, a man who works there, who wasn’t there at the time, said the shooting did not have to do with the barbershop.

“We couldn’t control it or anything,” said the man, who didn’t want to be identified.

Down the street, employees from another barbershop stood outside. A barber told WAVY News’ Liz Palka he heard the gunshot from his shop. He said he was concerned by how random the shooting was, knowing it very well could have happened outside of his barbershop.

“Random things like that in front of a barbershop, you get to worrying,” said the man. “Because it could have been this barbershop. It could have been someone standing out here.”

The teen was taken to a local hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
