JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A husband is suspected of killing his wife before turning the gun on himself early Thursday morning inside the couple’s home on Richmond Road in Toano.
Chief Deputy Steve Rubino tells WAVY.com officers were called after a family member went by the home to check on relatives and found 79-year-old James Edward Kite and 77-year-old Audrey Lily Boyle dead from gunshot wounds.
Tracy Stephens lives next door and says the couple led a private life on their rural property for more than 20 years. Stephens says her husband heard gunshots around 6 a.m. Thursday but he didn’t think much of the shots until he learned of his neighbors’ deaths.
“My husband said he heard something, but that’s not unusual out here in the rural area to hear,” said Stephens. “Coming up on hunting season, people are out there practicing and stuff.”
Rubino says a preliminary investigation shows Kite shot his wife in the kitchen and then went outside and shot himself in the garage.
Both victims were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond.
Police say there is no history of domestic disputes between the husband and wife, however, they say Kite had been suffering from medical issues.
