AG Herring reports progress on drug abuse prevention plan

Attorney General Mark R. Herring

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring says his heroin and prescription drug abuse prevention plan is working, even though deaths are up.

Last year, 10 On Your Side investigated a spike in heroin overdoses that killed 25 people in Virginia Beach.

Detectives told WAVY, the increase over several years forced them to change the way they investigated the cases.

They started using overdoses as a catalyst to track down drug dealers in the city.

The attorney general says more people died from heroin overdoses in Virginia last year, but his office also prosecuted more cases.
