Significant flooding across the area expected through Sunday

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for all coastal/tidal areas through Sunday.

Tidal flooding first hit the area hard Friday afternoon, with gusts up to 35 mph and some moderate tidal flooding Friday evening. The tidal flooding continued through Saturday night and the highest tide will occur Sunday afternoon — about 3 or 4 inches higher than what was seen Friday afternoon.

Rain continued Saturday, which added to the higher waters. Tidal flooding is expected to stay up through Sunday.

Do not drive through areas where you cannot see the depth of the water. Several become impassable during high tide.

Some residents may need to prepare their homes or business as water may move close to those areas, especially in tidal-prone areas.

WAVY TV 10 had a team of reporters from the Outer Banks in North Carolina to the Peninsula in Virginia covering Friday’s flooding. Click on the playlist below to view their reports.

Several local businesses and schools closed Friday or announced they would be closing early, in advance of the anticipated flooding. Click here for the complete, growing list.
