Container ship caught in Hurricane Joaquin

MIAMI (WAVY)- The United States Coast Guard is searching for a missing container ship reported to be caught in Hurricane Joaquin, near Crooked Island, Bahamas.

There are reportedly 33 crewmembers on board.

The El Faro, a 735-foot ro-ro cargo ship, was headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida.

Yesterday morning the Coast Guard Atlantic Area command center in Portsmouth received word that the El Faro was caught in Hurricane Joaquin, had lost propulsion and had taken on water. The flooding on the ship was reported to be contained at the time of the report.

Attempts to locate and reestablish communications with the ship were unsuccessful on Thursday, but the Coast Guard is continuing efforts to get in touch with the El Faro crew on Friday both by air and sea.
