SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – VDOT and ERT announced Thursday the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the Midtown Tunnel will be closed for tide gate tests.

The HRBT will be closed Friday morning starting at 2 a.m.

Anyone on the road at that time should expect to be stopped for 30 minutes in either direction. The schedule is as follows:

  • 2 a.m. – All eastbound traffic will be stopped.
  • 3 a.m. – All westbound traffic will be stopped.

To avoid delays, VDOT recommends that drivers take the I-664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

The tunnel will be closed Thursday from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. for testing. Motorists should use the I-264 Downtown Tunnel as an alternate route during this time.

These tests are happening so VDOT and ERT can ensure the tunnel and area roads are ready for Hurricane Joaquin, should the storm be a major threat.

Keep and eye on for your up-to-date traffic and weather information.
