NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A woman was found guilty in a Norfolk courtroom Thursday of killing her boyfriend’s daughter last year.
A jury convicted 25-year-old Emily Defries of second degree murder. The jury then recommended she receive a sentence of 20 years in prison, according to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Her formal sentencing is scheduled for January. The jury trial began Monday.
Defries was charged following the May 2014 death of her boyfriend’s 20-month-old daughter, Anna Bell. DeFries told police she was babysitting the little girl and two other children. She claimed she found Anna at the bottom of the stairs, then called 911. The Medical Examiner said she died from blunt force trauma and ruled her death a homicide.
