Va. Beach woman charged with manslaughter of boyfriend

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia Beach police say they found a man dead inside a home early Sunday morning and a suspect is in custody.

Officers tell 10 On Your Side they got a 911 call just after midnight from a home on Sedgewick Court, which is off North Great Neck Road. Police say they found 23-year-old Terrance Covington dead from injuries, although they would not elaborate on what those injuries were.

“I was shocked,” said Covington’s friend Sydney Hamilton. “It’s really, really sad.”

For those who knew Covington the shock of losing a friend still hasn’t worn off.

“He was awesome,” Hamilton added. “Terrance always made you laugh and when ever you needed to talk to somebody he was there.”

Covington died inside his home on Sedgewick Court early Sunday morning. He had just come back to his town house after a night out with his girlfriend, 20-year-old Megan Kayla DeJesus. Neighbors say they heard DeJesus yelling and screaming at Covington. About 20 minutes later, neighbors say they could hear DeJesus yelling for someone to call 911.

“It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” Hamilton added. “I really don’t understand it. Nobody understands it. I don’t think anybody ever will.”

Officers aren’t saying how Covington was killed, though the police report notes he was stabbed. Detectives ended up charging DeJesus with his death.

“The last time I spoke to him he said they were working on things,” Hamilton said. “He said they had their ups and downs.”

Friends tell us Covington and DeJesus had been dating on-and-off for three years. They just had a baby. Neighbors say it would not be uncommon to hear them fighting outside the home.

“I don’t know what happened, but it didn’t have to go that way,” Hamilton added. “It didn’t have to end up that way. Now his kids don’t have a dad and his youngest kid with her now he has to grow up knowing about his mom and his dad.”

DeJesus is being held inside the Virginia Beach Jail without bond. She will have a bond hearing Tuesday morning. She declined 10 On Your Side’s request for an interview.
