Wrestling leads to double shooting, police say

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Chesapeake Police confirmed that there was a double shooting Friday evening around 5 p.m.

It happened in the 2300 block of Herring Ditch Road. Police responded to the scene after a call about gunfire and learned that several men who work together had been wrestling, according to Officer Ravi Sheth.

“It got a little heated and went to a physical altercation, and then it escalated into an individual producing a weapon and shooting. Several shots were fired,” Sheth said.

Ty Davis, who answered his door with blood stains on his shirt, said the shooting happened in his front lawn, during an after party for a work function.

“Things got out of hand. Somebody just went a little wild, shot two guys. Very unexpected. Guy works for me every day,” Davis said.

Davis said he was in his back yard when the shooting happened, but he went to help the victims after he heard it. Police said both victims were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, one by medical helicopter. The victims were expected to recover, Sheth said.

After the shooting, the suspect ran away, according to police. Officers set up a perimeter with a K-9 search and caught the suspect about a quarter-mile from the scene near Route 17, Sheth said.

Davis said the people involved in the incident work for a construction contracting company.

“We throw these company functions every year, you know, and I have an after party with all the close friends in the company. We’ve worked together for many years, have this party at the house, you know, year after year, and then this happens right in my driveway. It’s not very appeasing,” Davis said.

It was not clear Friday night if the suspect had been injured, and police have not released his name. Charges are pending.
