LEXINGTON, Va. (WAVY) — A first-year Virginia Military Institute cadet died Monday night after collapsing during routine physical training earlier in the day.

VMI posted the information on its website. It says emergency crews treated him at the scene, but he died at a Lexington hospital Monday evening.

The school has notified his parents and identified the cadet Tuesday as 18-year-old Sean Duc Hoang of Fairfax. Hoang was a biology major and was a member of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.

VMI said Tuesday in a news release that the cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner’s office Roanoke.
