NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Navy has decommissioned the USS Kauffman after 28 years of service.
USS Kauffman is one of the last Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigates. These types of frigates were designed in the 1970s to replace World War II era destroyers. Now, these ships will be replaced.
A decommissioning ceremony was held Friday morning.
USS Kauffman’s final homecoming was in July. The ship is based at Naval Station Norfolk.
The last type of this frigate, the USS Simpson, will be decommissioned on Sept. 29. It is currently homeported at Mayport, Florida.
