FRISCO, N.C. (WAVY) – The National Park Service says they found the person who speared a sea turtle.
Wednesday, someone reported a man with a speargun tried to kill a live sea turtle near the Frisco Pier. Rangers say the man struck the turtle in the back. Witnesses say the animal was injured, but it managed to swim away.
Friday, the turtle was found dead; it washed up on shore.
The Park Service says it is investigating the incident along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA).
Authorities tell 10 On Your Side they identified the suspect. People who threaten or endanger sea turtles can get a fine of up to $50,000 and time in jail.
