Shooting victim: ‘please don’t let me die’

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Two neighbors rushed to help a man shot and bleeding out Friday morning on Shannon Drive in the Denbigh area of Newport News.

Newport News police got the call at 5:34 a.m. When they arrived on scene, they found a 21-year-old Jalin Marquis Deberry laying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was treated on the scene for a short time and quickly transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. He was later pronounced dead.

Lance and Krista Robertson, who live on the 200 block of Shannon Drive, heard as many as 20 shots before seeing the man suffering just feet from their front door.

“It’s just a crazy day; a lot going on first thing in the morning,” said Mr. Robertson. “I ran inside quickly, grabbed my wife and the baby and told them to get on the ground.”

The Robertson’s rushed to the man’s aid when the gunfire stopped.

“I knew he’d been shot, so I grabbed a towel and ran over there to help him,” said Mrs. Robertson. “I think he had a gunshot wound to the neck and two to the stomach.”

Mr. Robertson says the victim appeared to be in severe pain when he said, “‘Please don’t let me die. Somebody help me please.'”
