Rabid raccoon killed by dog in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton Health Department confirms there was a raccoon in the Butler Farm area of the city that tested positive for rabies.

Officials say the rabid raccoon was killed by was killed by a family dog.

Officials are urging all residents to make sure their pets have current rabies shots and to not feed wild animals or leave food outside for their pets that may attract wild animals.

If a citizen sees a sickly animal, particularly a raccoon, they should call the Hampton City Animal Control at 727-6111 and advise them of its location so they can pick up the animal. Anyone needing additional information may call the Health Department at 727-2570.
