Tips to keep local students safe at the bus stop

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Now that children are back in school, every day there will be hundreds of buses on the streets of Hampton Roads. It’s an important time to watch out for the buses. It’s also important to teach your children the safest ways around them.

Keep these tips in mind:

Drivers, when you see the flashing red lights and the stop bar, you must stop and allow children to get on or off the bus. It’s the law. If you are caught passing a stopped school bus you could get a $250 ticket.

Students, if you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road, then take five giant steps ahead before you cross – so the driver can see you from the front windshield.
When the bus is pulling up to your stop make sure you stand five giant steps away from the curb away from the street.

Also, make sure you stay in your seat and use your inside voice so the driver can concentrate on the road.
