VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police say thanks to community tips, they were able to track down and arrest the suspect accused of stealing an HRT van last week.
Robbery detectives located De’Trel Dwight Winstead, 23, at a hotel in Norfolk. Winstead was charged with abduction, robbery and grand larceny. He’s being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
Investigators say Winstead is the man who boarded a Paratransit van picking up passengers at the Jamestown Commons on College Park Boulevard Friday morning and demanded a ride. When he refused to leave, the driver exited to get help and that’s when he took off in the vehicle. There was one passenger on board. Police say he drove the stolen van for almost two miles before crashing. The passenger, who spoke to WAVY News 10, said it was frightening, but fortunately she was not injured in the ordeal.
Police released these photos of the suspect, captured on the van’s surveillance camera. Investigators say they received multiple tips from the public following because of the pictures. They originally believed the suspect was a teenager.
