Hampton, William & Mary open 2015 season with wins

David Watford, who graduated from Hampton High School, threw five touchdowns in his debut back home and helped Hampton University take down Kentucky State 35-20 on Saturday night. Watford also threw three inteterceptions, but connected on 22 of 37 passes for 345 yards. The Pirates’ 21-0 halftime lead dwindled to 21-17 before a Watford-to-Twarn Mixon extended the lead back to 28-17.

Meanwhile, the College of William and Mary ran all over Lafayette and opened its season with a 34-7 win. Junior quarterback Steve Cluley hit 20 of 30 pass attempts for 289 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Mikal Abdul-Saboor rushed for 106 yards and two more touchdowns on 16 carries.

Hampton will host the University of Richmond next weekend, while William & Mary will enjoy a bye week before traveling to the University of Virginia on Sept. 19.
