NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An apartment packed with people caused the floor to sink and buckle at an off-campus building near Old Dominion University Friday night, according to property managers.
ODU Police broke up the party and evacuated some residents at The District ODU after people in the unit below contacted authorities about the situation. The Norfolk Fire Department also responded, and contacted apartment maintenance staff.
A representative from the City of Norfolk conducted an inspection, and residents of the two affected units were relocated to new apartments on the property, according to Mark Evans, a spokesperson for The District ODU. All other residents were allowed to stay in their apartments while maintenance staff works to repair the buckled floor.
Leases at The District permit a maximum of ten people in each apartment at any time, Evans wrote in a statement.
The building is privately owned and not associated with Old Dominion University.
