Newport News store employee accused of using friend to steal

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A local woman is accused of using her friend to help her shoplift at her own workplace.

Newport News police say 27-year-old Tiara Capers was a cashier at the Ross clothing store on Jefferson Avenue when she was ringing up a person known to her. According to investigators, Capers rang up only some of the items and put other items in a bag without charging them.

The crime happened Monday around 1:30 p.m.

Capers was charged with felony embezzlement.
